Hodge-Podge

hodge-podge

First off, for writers, I’m doing a 2-day class for LBLI (that’s Left Behind and Loving It) for those NOT going to RWA.  It’s called, “So You Want to be a Published Author.”  Looking for ideas on other classes so if you have any interest in anything you’d like to hear me ramble like an idiot about–holla. There will be give-aways

There was quiet a to-do yesterday on twitter over Alice Hoffman’s review of a reviewer who gave her a bad review :lmao: Did you get all that?

Yes it’s stinky and unprofessional and yes even I have 1-2 authors I won’t buy anymore because of their behavior online but I don’t broadcast.  And does it really deserve all that attention?

What online author behavior turns you off? Feel free to share your horror stories.  What would take an author off your to-try or auto-buy list?

And for your amusement, Geek Pranks! My fave is the statue of John Harvard turned into Master Chief from Halo3!!  :lmao:

Sigh in the heat of the moment a person loses their shiz and then blast it all over the internet. It’s a shame really because I’m sure she’s full of regret. I HOPE she’s full of regret. The internet is forever people, don’t forget it!

    Your workshop sounds cool. :wootrock:

I’m sick of authors recommending their own books to me on Goodreads and asking me to become their fan on Facebook. Hello, TACKY.

Here are some more tacky author behaviors: forwarding EVERY review you ever receive to EVERY Yahoo group you’re in; inserting the title of one or all of your books into every group/blog/forum discussion, whether or not it’s relevant; recommending your own book(s) to every person seeking something to read, regardless of the fact that they specifically said they DON’T want to read about zombie cowboys and your book just happens to be about zombie cowboys (they’ll certainly like YOUR zombie cowboys because YOUR zombie cowboys are sooper speshul); tweeting/blogging/posting every single dirty detail of your writing career on public forums instead of your personal blog or author loop; ranting about reviewers and bad reviews in public arenas; confronting reviewers on their own blogs and telling them they’re just too dumb to “get” your story and are therefore disqualified from reviewing it, etc.

There are lots more, but those are the biggies.

What would take an author off your to-try or auto-buy list?

Posting personal info or outing a reviewer.

Just being a nasty shit in general *coughA.S.cough*

Making threats to reviewers and their families.

Acting like a 2 year old and ranting.

I might or might not buy… when they’re all over the place spamming blogs and groups with their books.

Just on an every day level though, I find it very entertaining when an author has a public meltdown like that. I won’t buy their books because of it, but I do find it fun to watch. Does that make me as bad as them? :paper:

You know, I get irked when someone puts me on their newsletter list when I didn’t ask to be. Also, yeah the commenting on my page about your books or reviews is kind of weird.
