Obsessive

obsessive

As my children grow I watch them, the tendancies they have, the little personality quirks that shine through. Some of those quirks are nothing like me (frankly my daughter is nothing like me or my husband personality-wise though she looks like me - where did all that drama come from?) and then of course there are those traits that make me think, wow that’s all me…

For instance, my baby child is completely and totally obsessed with Spiderman right now. More to the point, Spiderman 3. He wants to watch it every single day. He runs around with his headless Spiderman action figure. He calls his Power Rangers Spiderman. He calls himself Spiderman.

I’m f’ing sick of Tobey Maguire’s face, I can tell you that. But that’s beside the point.

What I’m getting at is that I think the kid gets this obsessive behavior from me. Sigh. Yes I can become obsessed. I think all of those obsessive feelings actually help out my writing, though. Like, I’ve modeled a hero after an actor let’s say and I want to find photos of said actor to keep me focused.

Hours later I’ve got seventy-five pictures saved on my hard drive, a couple of YouTube videos on constant rotation and I’m in the zone, baby.

Plus my baby child has a vivid imagination. He can play for hours by himself, talking to himself (in a disturbing voice saying over and over again, “I’m Spiderman.”). I used to play like that too. For hours. Outside. All by myself. I was an only child until I was eleven so for a long time I was all I had.

Maybe when he grows up he’ll be a writer…
