It’s my party…

In two weeks I’m going turn thirty-five years old. Naturally, I just want to sit around feeling old and untoned. However, my friend is throwing me an eighties party so that’s not really possible.

Instead of growing old gracefully I’m going to go back in time.Waaay back in time, and it’s all about the costume and the music. Earlier today, I spent a lovely afternoon procrastinating writing by putting together a rockin’ eighties playlist for my ipod. And I’m trying to decide what costume to wear. People used to tell me I looked like Molly Ringlwald, so I was thinking Pretty in Pink. But I don’t have a pink dress, and I’m not in the mood to look for one. And actually, back in the day, I really wanted to be Annie Potts’s character in that movie. She was so much cooler than stupid Andie, don’t you think?

However, I already have a Madonna outfit (complete with my old Adidas!) but I’ve worn it and I hate wearing costumes twice. So, I’d have to find a new Madonna ensemble. Luckily, there are a lot to choose from. I’ve always wanted to be the above Madonna, but it’s hard to pull off. That’s a difficult jacket to replicate. And even if I substituted something easy, I’d know it wasn’t authentic and it would bug me.
Kay, this is a hot outfit, but it’s really unflattering. I mean, it really didn’t even look that good on Madonna and that’s saying something. However, if I wore this I’d have a really good reason to roll around humping the floor. (Normally I just blame alcohol.)

I actually do the Seeking Susan look pretty naturally. I’m sad to say that I could go into my closet and walk out looking pretty similar to this and it would take me all of five minutes.

OR, I could just do the New Wave thing. I do like the makeup.
So, if you lived here and I invited you to my birthday bash, what would magnificent 80’s costume would you create?

The beard makes it hard… back in the actual eighties, my look changed every other year or so. We could do Kings-era Adam, Strip-era Adam, Stray Cats, Long Haired Glam Metal… none of it would be new to me.
with the beard? Hmmm… I could trim it short, put on my leather and jeans and do a sort of red-headed George Michael thing…

oh, and BTW, the last picture reminded me… Missing Persons/Wall of Voodoo was one of my first concerts without any adult supervision. Good memory, that.

Oh, Will. To tell. I remember when all my friends went to see the Thompson Twins and my mom wouldn’t let me. I was so sad.

omG….
I would be Baby from Dirty Dancing.
or Jules from St. Elmo’s Fire
or wear overalls with no shirt and scarves in my hair from “Come on Eileen” video.
or Paul Stanley from KISS.
If any men dress up like Joe Elliot from “Pour Some Sugar on Me” I could be counted on to do bad things.

I agree, Annie Potts was way more interesting. WAY. And I loved Desperately Seeking Susan. You could do the Like a Prayer outfit and dye your hair black for the night.
It I was going to be there…hmm. I think I’d do the bra thing and the mole. If you’ve got the cleavage, you’re good to go.

How about Pat Benatar, with the short hair and the eyeshadow?
December 6th, 2007 at 8:50 am
I don’t mind recycling costumes — and I still have the Cyndi Lauper “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” ensemble.

The 80s!
I don’t remember the 80s!! Not having been a teenager in the 80s, I’d have no idea. But the Seeking Susan outfit would work.
December 6th, 2007 at 10:20 am
Feist, you go with the 80’s!!
I’ve been listening to 80’s and 90’s music lately and can’t get enough of my old faves. LOL on Annie Potts vs. Andy. Of course! Annie Potts had fun fun fun and Andy didn’t. Oh but that duck was so nice . . . not shaggable, but nice. LOL!

You know, as much as I deny it, I could probably whip something up all too easily.
I’m not going to think about that anymore.

I loved Annie Potts’ character in Pretty in Pink. She was waaaay cooler than anyone else. Oh and Blaine. James Spader was such an ass and so hot. In fact I just watched Sex Lies & Videotape a few nights ago and yummmm James…
Hmmm who would I be? Well I’d probably lean more towards the Madonna side. Bust out my rubber bracelets and lace gloves. Tho I did that pastel, brooch at the neck thing rather well too…
Long live the 80s!

I hated James Spader until I saw The Secretary and now I just want him to do bad bad things to me. God, he was hot in that movie.
Interestingly, in the original version Ducky was supposed to end up with Andie, but they changed it. I love ducky.
As an aside, I’d just like to say right now that my first ever mega crush was on John Cusack. I still have it.
December 6th, 2007 at 4:00 pm
John Cusack is definitely the sweetest guy on the planet, but,in the 80’s, he took a sorry second to Matt Dillon, I still love bad boys - I was going to marry him some day. I think he’s still single…waiting for me to show up, possibly??
Back in the day I was told I looked like Belinda Carlysle, so I guess I’d come to your party looking like a Go-Go. Love dem 80’s!
December 6th, 2007 at 7:05 pm
LOL I was gonna say do you actually NEED a reason to roll around humping the floor?
Back int eh 80’s i looked like Bill Cosby’s oldest daughter :( not much to work with but I’d totally love to do the Cyndi Lauper thing
Ya’ll are totally making me want to go fill my Blockbuster Que with all my classic faves!

I knew that about Pretty In Pink as well. I remember reading an interview with John Hughes where he said that Molly talked him out of it and wanted Blaine to get the girl. He said that a large part of making Some Kind of Wonderful was to do that ending after all.
So it all worked out. *grin* SKOW is my second favorite Hughes, after Sixteen Candles.

Oh, wow, this is a great place to be today! I am so totally 80s.
Lol.
I agree with you, I loved Ducky. I watched that movie a thousand times. I love 80s flicks. Oh, but The Lost Boys won out. I’ve seen that movie like a zillion times! Can’t get enough of it.
Madona was way cool in the 80s. Not sure what’s going on with her nowadays. But I digged the lace, bracelets and wavy hair. Loved the white outfit she wears in the filmclip for Material Girl. Would love to wear that.
But I would most likely dress up as Cyndi Lauper. She was my 80s Goddess. Worshipped the woman. She had style. Sure, it was mostly mismatched style. But still rockin’.
You could always just dress up as that chick in The Lost Boys. ;) You know, Jami Gertz character? I think her name was Star.

PS. Either way, have FUN!
December 6th, 2007 at 9:49 pm
OMG!!!!!!! I actually AM going to be there for the party-woohoo! I had a surprise all arranged with the Feist’s dh, but she discovered our dirty secret today. Ah well, I’m still going!
Now, what to wear?
My first thought was Madonna-esque, Desperately Seeking Susan era because that’s how I dressed in the 80’s and I still have a pair of my boots and a leather jacket from those days. Of course, I also adore Cindy Lauper, and that would be fun. Then there was my Robert Palmer girl period, which would be simple enough to replicate. But Will had to mention Adam Ant! OMG, I MUST be Adam Ant! I had the worst crush on him, and the next best thing to being with him is to BE him, right? But it’d take forever to find the right gear, not to mention money, but OMG!
What to do, what to do…
December 6th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
OMG, Eden, if you did the Adam Ant thing you know I’d be like no drinks away from girl on girl action!

December 7th, 2007 at 4:13 am
I would have to wear a SAVE FERRIS T-shirt.
December 7th, 2007 at 5:10 am
Oh god! Ferris Bueller’s Day Off! I love that movie. Even converted the kids.
Weren’t the 80’s when Olivia Newton John went physical?
December 7th, 2007 at 11:34 am
Oooooooo we LOVE Ferris!!!!!! And um…oh man…Billy Idol
December 7th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
I want Johnny Depp from 21 Jump Street. I’d wear whatever that required.
December 7th, 2007 at 6:58 pm
My former husband’s cousin was an actress - and she played Johnny Depp’s girlfriend on 21 Jump Street! I was soooooo jealous! Sooooo sooooo jealous! Sigh.
December 8th, 2007 at 10:58 am
I would totally come as Boy George! You need a Boy George icon. “I’ll tumble 4 ya…”
December 10th, 2007 at 1:07 am
*shiver*
Eden dressed as Adam.
Yum!
December 10th, 2007 at 1:43 am
Oh yeah-I’m totally doing the Adam Ant costume! Stand and deliver, baby!
And yes, I mean that just the way it sounds.
