So I’m going to a party in a few weeks. A Halloween party. This party will be similar to the one I attended years back. One that left me wide eyed and forever changed. A party that inspired my book The Pirate’s Booty. If you’ve not read the book, well there’s an opening scene that’s, err, very provocative and hmm… gee, it’s a little hard to explain. Anyway it’s hot.

As I said, it’s been years since I attended this type of party. I don’t even do much at them but sit around with my eyes wide open, and my jaw on the floor. But it’s fun and it’s social. And let me tell you, I need social since I don’t get out much. So I’m…really looking forward to this occasion. Now here’s where I need your help.

With this type of party, and with the type of person I am (actually a bit shy, but try to pretend I’m not and try to look a bit sexy!) I’m trying to decide what to wear. I only have a couple of weeks to decide. And there IS a bit of a theme. Here it is:

The theme this year is MAGIC of every order~supernatural or illusion, mystical or miraculous. Come as you are~bewitching, magical and bright.

So umm. I write paranormal spuratically. And I’m looking at this going…Harry Potter? A witch? I’m not totally creative with this subject. I have no idea of my options or how to build my own costume. And that’s why I’m turning to you guys. I want to have fun and look cute/sexy. So what should I do? Buy a pre-made costume and call it good, or try to put something fabulous together. What would you do? Throw me some ideas! Because I need them. Otherwise I’ll just end up in something like this which seems way too expensive ($80)and just looks cheap and boring.

Damn that costume is $80??? That’s ridiculous! But it is cute.

Nah, you gotta do something more creative. But…I don’t know what cos I’m lame. Where’s Feist? Our resident costume pro? You need her! :doglick:

  2. Shelli Says:

Yeah $80! I have had SOME ideas… like finding some kind of corset top and a black skirt, and getting fairy wings… but that can creep up $ wise. And plus I don’t know… I just don’t know. I can’t spend $80 though. It’s just not gonna happen! LOL.

I’m thinking I’m thinking. Give me a few. I’ll be back tomorrow. :trolls:

  4. Sasha Says:

Think creative and sparkly makeup too. Sparkles and dramatic eye paint says MAGIK to me. :)

Corsets can be expensive, but if you have slinky or silky dress, think Nymph? Maybe a crown of leaves woven together and some fall colored makeup. Low cleavage, but Gauzey/flowing everywhere else? Sort or long skirt. That way you’ll feel comfortable, but sexy too.

I’m not very good at costumes, but hey.. I had one idea. LOL

  5. Shelli Says:

Sasha, I’m kinda really liking that idea! Especially the Halloween twist/fall makeup. I have to figure out how to do make a headpiece. It should be TOO hard. :)

  6. Shelli Says:

    Do nymph’s have wings??

  7. Amie Stuart Says:

I bet between hair and makeup you could really jazz up something simple!

  8. Emma Says:

$80 bucks? Wow. I don’t know…think Stevie Nicks. She’s mystical and bewitching. I like Sasha and Amie’s idea. I’d probably do that. Anything to save me from having to spend 80 dollars on something I’d probably never wear again.

  9. Mari Says:

    Hey, Shelli!

If you want to go the premaid costumes route there are less expensive venues out there…http://www.halloweenexpress.com/black-rose-witch-adult-costume-p-3944.html - they have several to choose from that are about half the one you posted.

But instead - think about a using that black nightgown that I know you already own (slip underneath if necessary) And dress that up a bit with inexpensive accessories from the local dollar store. Can’t get much sexier than that!

Relax and have fun. I love costume parties!!!

  10. Shelli Says:

Ah, Mari! I’ve been single for so long I don’t have any black nightgowns! I just realized how pathetic that is when I typed it. I suppose I could find one on clearance though :wootrock:

  11. Lacy Danes Says:

Love the nymph idea too Shelli.
If you want to borrow my orange wings you are more than welcome to them. You could do the black nightgown with the wreath and then the orange wings. Some gliter stockings or fishnets with heels and then some sparkly dramatic makeup. You would look amazing!

my wings are about the color of the shirt you had on yesterday.

    Hugs,
    Lacy.

  12. Shelli Says:

Oh! The orange wings, Lacy! What a good idea! And the head wreath and some kind of bottom sexy thing. And glitter and autumn-ee makeup! It’s all coming together! I’m SO glad I posted about this here! You guys are SMART!

  13. Lillian Says:

You can alwo do cool things with your makeup. Like draw swirly stuff around your eyes!

  14. Sasha Says:

    YAY!! I’m glad I helped!!
You certainly have the hair to work with too, so this will be great, and much gentler onteh wallet…which is always good! :bounce:

  15. Sasha Says:

And yes, the Orange wings!! You’ll be great.

We want a picture when you’re all done up!

  16. Shelli Says:

Yes! Pictures! I will certainly remember a camera now. I just have to figure out how to do makeup. Lots of glitter and gold and orange I’m thinking… maybe. I’ll research

  17. Phyllis Lamken Says:

Some of the best costumes are not bought. My 17 year old daughter, Amber, told me that she was coming to the local book store launch party as Sirius Black. When I saw her walk in, I laughed. She looked so much like Sirius Black. The bookstore owner has known Amber for 12 years and she didn’t recognize her. She did it with eyeliner for a beard, lots and lots of gel to make her hair look string, and her dad’s tweed jacket.

Give it some time, you will get the inspiration. :nener:
